Linux for Dummies

July 26, 2008

At least that’s what I feel ought to be on my reading list for the weekend. George still hasn’t had time to reload Wolvix. I still feel so stupid. Kevin’s teasing didn’t help. He can be a real pain in the butt some days. He called yesterday and pulled a prank call on me. Worst part is that when I finally figured out it was Kevin pulling a fast one, all I could do is laugh. George laughed too when I told him about it.

My one customer called again. I really think he just likes the sound of my voice. Otherwise, he is so stupid that he shouldn’t be allowed a computer! Probably a good thing I only deal with him on the phone. If I actually had to see him in person, I’d either deck him or just scream. I’m sorry, but how many times does it take to learn how to clear the cookies off of your browser? sigh…

I’m going to the library this afternoon and actually see if they have a book on Linux. George has some at the office, but they are so full of markers and bits of paper, that I don’t want to disturb them. I’m probably being silly, but… I also don’t want to admit that I really need a book on computers. Can you tell I am still feeling stupid about screwing up that hard drive? sigh….

More tomorrow when I’m done beating my head against the wall.

Wolvix on my mind…

July 24, 2008

Ok, it’s Thursday. So shoot me. I screwed up my laptop. Big time. George and Kevin told me that Linux was easier and trickier than Windows. They were right. I know that George mentioned something about the word “root”, but did I remember before it was too late? Noooooo! There I was trying to get all the  settings right and next thing I knew, Boom! No computer. Well, sorta functional, but not working right. So, I called George. He was out and I got the tech support switch over, and got to hear my own lovely voice tell me that “all our techs are busy at this time, please leave your name and number and we will get back to you as soon as possible.”

ARgh!!! I just shut down my laptop and decided to do something else. I cleaned house. Yuck! I’m not a dirty person, but I did the sort of Spring Clean type clean to get my mind off the computer. George showed up just as I finished wiping down the walls in the kitchen.

We went over to my laptop and he started looking at it. I buggered it up really well. In the end, I felt such an idiot. What I learned is that you can’t treat any version of Linux like you would a Windows machine. I deselected a few things that just totally dumped my operating platform. Damn! Lucky for me, George put my old hard drive with Windows back in my machine and got me up and running. He’s taking the other hard drive and will reformat it and reload Wolvix. Then, he and I are going to sit down and go through it program by program and get it all set up.

Of course since I started cleaning house, I had to finish. George chatted with me while I cleaned and then when I was too tired to think, he called Kevin. After they were done making jokes at my expense over the laptop, he had Kevin bring pizza over and we watched a couple episodes of Babylon 5.

Work has been easy this week. Just a few tech calls. People unplugging their Ruckus units and not being able to type in the generic password without someone holding their hand. Oh well. I guess I have a bit more sympathy for them after my screwup with my laptop.

I also helped Kelly move some stuff. She has more junk than anyone I know. I don’t have as much stuff in my whole house as she does in two rooms. OMGS! Now I’m so sore it isn’t funny. My hands feel like hamburger and we won’t even talk about my feet. I’m so glad it is a light and easy day today at work!

Penguins, wolves and thunderstorms

July 19, 2008

Yesterday when I left the office, I didn’t even get to my truck before the skies opened up and dumped. Drop, drip, whooooossssshhhh! I was soaked. This is scary as my truck is parked about 50ft. away from the office front door.

And, I’m happy to report that my laptop case kept my computer dry. I was bringing it home to work on Linux. George and Kevin are trying to switch all of the office computers over to some flavor of Linux.  yes, there are penguins all over the office. Kevin uses Ubuntu. George uses Ubuntu and Wolvix. I got given a hard drive with Wolvix on it to play with on my laptop. In a few minutes I’ll be exchanging hard drives and take it for a walk.   yeah, bad joke… wolvix, walk…

If it all goes wrong, George gets to deal with a screaming person on the other end of the phone for once.

Wish me luck!
